Call for Track Papers

    Knowledge Environment and Mulsemedia Track

Traditionally, multimedia applications have primarily engaged two of the human senses - the audio and the visual - out of the five possible. With recent advances in computational technology, it is now possible to talk of applications that engage the other three senses, as well: tactile, olfaction, and gustatory. This integration leads to a paradigm shift away from the old multimedia towards the new mulsemedia - multiple sensorial media. How mulsemedia applications and technologies can be used to foster knowledge environments is, however, still an open research question. Accordingly, this track invites submissions at the confluence of these two research areas. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Mulsemedia-enhanced knowledge creation
  • Management of mulsemedia and knowledge environments
  • Case studies on the use of mulsemedia in knowledge environments
  • Integration of mulsemedia and knowledge systems
  • Using mulsemedia to share knowledge
  • Context-aware knowledge
  • Mulsemedia and e-learning
  • Mulsemedia and e-commerce

Submission Process
Full paper submissions must be made electronically through the ICDEM Manuscript Central submission system, by April 20, 2010. Papers should not exceed 8 pages.
Paper format may be found at: http://www.demfoundation.org/sub.htm

Important Dates
- April 20, 2010: Deadline for track related paper submissions

   Digital Library Track

Digital libraries focus on storing and organizing digital objects according to various scopes and facets. Intelligent access to these objects are provided through metadata/semantic-based or content-based search engine according to users requirements. Semantic services enhance the organization of digital objects to facilitate their access and exploitation of their structure and meaning for both humans and machines. Semantic Digital Libraries require database management systems for the handling of structured data, taking into consideration the models used to represent semantics. To foster the realization of semantic digital library, metadata models, ontology models, and query languages have been combined to Digital Library services. However, technologies for semantic digital libraries such as database engines, data store in RDF,SPARQL queries, and ontologies represented in RDFS and OWL often appear to be immature. Solid semantic management layer concepts, architectures, and tools are important to everyone in the semantic digital library ecosystem, and creating them requires a strong community, with a critical mass of involvement. The Digital Library track focusses on two main issues: (1) the evolution of digital libraries as knowledge environment and (2) semantic digital libraries for improving user experiences.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Semantic Digital Library information visualisation
  • Search, retrieval and browsing interfaces to all forms of multilingual digital content
  • Managing Collaborative Digital Library Collections
  • Cultural Heritage Preservation
  • Digital Library case studies of information behavior and user needs and modeling
  • Novel semantic digital library content and use environments
  • Multimedia Open Access publishing and copyright management
  • Social Networking and digital library Systems
